At the Brandenburg Gate as part of the anniversary of German unification 2018 and at the Bundesverfassungsgericht in Karlsruhe celebrating the 70th anniversary of the German Grundgesetz
In 1918 two German republics were proclaimed just a few hundred metres as the crow flies from the Maxim Gorki Theatre and the Brandenburg Gate. On 3 October 1990, the union of the two German states was officially declared, and that day has been celebrated as the Day of the Germans ever since. Now is the time, however, to accept that the constitution is not a project from an ethnically homogeneous group, but rather a very diverse community of individuals. The Polish director and re-discoverer of the choral principle Marta Górnicka previously appeared at the Gorki with the coproduction Hymn to Love, as well as the video installation Konstytucia in the Third Berlin Autumn Salon in November 2017. Górnicka presents the chorus as one of the most powerful elements of the theatre. With the utmost precision she choreographs and directs a group composed of diverse individuals. The focus is on raising their voices as one heterogeneous voice. On October 3rd 2018, the Grundgesetz will be performed through the libretto adapted by Marta Górnicka in front of the Brandenburg Gate and in May 2019 in front of the Bundesverfassungsgericht in Karslruhe with a chorus of 50 professional and non-professional actors from civil society’s many different spectra. Berlin and Karlsruhe citizens will expose the German Grundgesetz (Basic Law) to a stress test to check the resilience of its statements in situations of crisis.
