Robert Rumas, born in Kielce, Poland, completed his studies in painting and multimedia at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk in 1991. He addresses the issues around society as an object of manipulation in the context of concepts about the economy, religion, nation and ethnicity. From the very beginning he presented clear criticisms of Polish Catholicism and investigated and designed alternative models of society in his works. Rumas presents his works in the top art institutions in Poland and the rest of the world, including the National Museum and Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, Moderna Musset Stockholm and National Centre for Contemporary Art in Moscow, as well as the Kunsthallen in Vienna, Berlin and Hamburg. In 2004 he began to work more in stage and set design for multimedia, theatre and opera productions, which have led him to numerous renowned stages in Berlin, Warsaw and beyond. In 2015 he received the Katarzyna Kobro award from the Academy of Polish Artists in Łódź. At the Maxim Gorki Theatre, Rumas is the set designer for Marta Górnicka’s 2021 production Still Life.
