The present. A transit area. Gleaming light, order, security, no emergency exits. People moving like elevators. Three men of different origins and classes, perhaps envoys from the future, perhaps ghosts from the past, recall an almost-forgotten, but long overdue mission and try, one more time, to free an island from slavery. Heiner Müller wrote his play Der Auftrag (The Mission) at the end of the 1970s. It seems to deal with the final phase of the French Revolution, but that's only at first glance. It is the memory of a »time of betrayal« and failure. A historical experiment is played out for a possible future, in which the continuum, the eternal return of the same, is exploded.
