Heiner Müller, born in 1929, was one of the foremost playwrights of the 20th century. Müller was drafted into the army at the age of 15 years, just before the war ended. He worked as a writer and journalist after graduating from secondary school in the GDR, and began to work for the Maxim Gorki Theatre in 1958. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, Müller became director and president of the Academy of Arts in (East) Berlin.
