Streulicht

An industrial area. The air is thicker here than other places. A young woman returns to where she was born. Her childhood friends are getting married. She follows the traces of her origins, remembers the father that toiled away in the plant in the neighbourhood, the lack of words and the cramped spaces, the mother who talked about her childhood and youth in Turkey, her silent departure at some point, the school as an exclusionary institution. »For me there were only two possibilities at that time: to extinguish myself either very quietly or very loudly. It did not occur to me that there could be a third possibility.« In her award-winning debut, Deniz Ohde constructs a narrative of growing up in inequality and of the ubiquity of classism and racism. Nurkan Erpulat stages the text as a melancholic coming-of-age story, as a passage out of circumstances.
