175 Jahre Märzrevolution

»...DASS DIEJENIGEN AUCH VERGESSEN WERDEN, WELCHE AN SICH SELBST ZU DENKEN VERGASSEN.«

Lesung zum 175. Jubiläum der Märzrevolution

The 18th of March 1848 has come to represent both the beginning of the democratic tradition in Germany, as well as the sacrifices those achievements demanded. On this day it was not only in Berlin that barricade battles and gun fights broke out in which hundreds of civilians lost their lives. Women, above all from the poorer parts of Berlin’s population, played a significant part in the protests and physical confrontations. In the aftermath of these battles, the Prussian National Assembly met to draw up a constitution in the Singakademie am Festungsgraben, today’s Maxim Gorki Theatre. »The history of all eras, and especially today’s, teaches us that those who forgot to think of themselves will also be forgotten,« wrote Louise Otto-Peters in 1849. In this spirit, on the 18th of March political authors of today take on this task and commemorate the revolutionary women of that time in texts.
