After reaching a near fatal collapse following the breakdown of the Soviet Union, Armenian cinema has gradually restored its footing thanks in large part to the vitality of the non-fiction genre. Embracing the liberties of low-budget filmmaking, a circle of young documentarians is reaching deep into the unseen pockets of contemporary Armenian society to address pressing subjects through an array of artistically experimental and politically-conscious approaches. The selected short documentaries in this program offer a glimpse of this rapidly developing wave, which serves as a potent signal of the intellectual and creative vibrancy of Armenia’s independent film scene.
