Achille Mbembe is a philosopher, political scientist and public intellectual who has shaped the debate on post-colonialism for more than 20 years. He has written extensively on African history and politics. His latest book Critique de la raison nègre – for which he was awarded the Geschwister-Scholl-Preis in 2015 – has sparked a new debate on ideas of capitalism, race and globalization. With a Ph.D in History from the Sorbonne and a D.E.A. in Political Science from the Institut d’Etudes Politiques (Paris), Mbembe has taught at a number of renowned universities worldwide and currently holds a chair at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa.
