"My military service was already over. But when the revolution broke out in my country, I was drafted again. I was stuck for a whole year as a non-commissioned officer. I had to direct the Bassel al-Assad cinema as a military base. With a hand-held camera, I tried to document my everyday life, while the remaining technicians told me their stories. Some of them lost their homes, some friends and family. At home I watched the rocket attacks on the news. I woke up, put my uniform back on and went to the military base."
Ziyad Kalthoum finished his documentary The Immortal Sergeant in 2012 before he left Syria and settled in Lebanon.
