Following a tradition of artists’ street performance and protest marches, Lara Schnitger presents Suffragette City, a sculptural procession championing women’s rights. The objects in the procession include quilts emblazoned with protest slogans; a series of “Slut Stick” sculptures constructed out of delicate textiles and lumber, and carried by women in suffragette-inspired dresses; large-scale sculptures with distinct performative elements; and a collection of protective cloaks for children. With public participation at its core, the procession is both playful and political, inspired by the history of feminist agitprop, as well as increasingly imperative demands for equality and safety.
