In 1915 Zabel Yesayan belonged to Istanbul’s cultural elite. She was the only woman put on the deportation list of Armenian intellectuals for 24/April 1915 and only narrowly survived the genocide. Shortly thereafter, she wrote the novella My Soul in Exile, which gives the series its title, and in it she paints an insightful portrait of Armenian life in the Ottoman Empire before the catastrophe. Her text is read and discussed by Fatma Aydemir, Anahit Bagradjans, Karosh Taha and Maryam Zaree. In their own works, these four authors deal with topics such as migration, exile, identity and resistance. They tell stories of exclusion, the work of remembering, and cultural diversity, interweaving personal experiences with broader social issues.
