With her famous essay "The Laughter of Medusa", French writer, dramaturg, essayist, feminist and theorist Hélène Cixous became the dynamic driving force behind a female writing, whose effects on feminist debates and gender discourse are still felt today. Over the course of the student protests in Paris, she was involved in the creation of the University of Vincennes (later Paris VIII), where she founded a centre for Études Féminines in 1974. Born in Oran in Algeria in 1937 to Jewish parents, she was closely connected to the development of deconstruction through her long-standing friendship with Jacques Derrida.
