Historian Dipesh Chakrabarty, co-founder of Subaltern Studies, is one of the pioneers in post-colonial historiography. His studies illustrate the limits of applying central categories of modernity in an analysis of non-western societies, thus contributing to a critique of eurocentrism in the humanities and social sciences. After studying at the University of Colcata, Chakrabarty obtained a Ph.D in History from the Australian National University in Canberra. In 2016, he held the Munich History Lecture at Ludwig Maximilian University, Munich.
He is currently Lawrence A. Kimpton Distinguished Service Professor of History, South Asian Languages and Civilizations at the University of Chicago.
