The flag of Yugoslavia, the symbol of a socialist utopia, fails to evade the dog's bites. The video work Yurope by God's Entertainment presents an image of Yugoslavia shattered and taken apart by nationalist ideas. The Yugoslav Wars, however, are not idiosyncratic, isolated events of extreme violence. With this video, God's Entertainment aims to draw attention to their emergence in the broader context of the end of the Cold War. Political and economic transformations, the collapse of the Soviet Union, and the rise of nationalist movements in Europe – these are the interrelations that are rarely discussed in relation to the Yugoslav Wars. The interconnections of unresolved nationalist conflicts are even clearer today, when nationalism, ethnic and racial violence, populism and conspiracy theories can be regarded even less as ›Balkan‹ phenomena, because of their far more striking emergence as European and global problems.
