What appears for our democratic common sense to be socially marginal, and therefore in need for special minority rights, becomes in Želimir Žilnik films symbolically central. The stories of migrants he tells in Fortress Europe (2001) reveal deep structural contradictions and limits of our identity-based communities and their political institutions.
