For the ten-year anniversary edition of the Prosa der Verhältnisse literary series, co-produced by the Maxim Gorki Theatre and the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung and curated by Deniz Utlu, Utlu presents his third novel Vaters Meer, together with fellow authors and colleagues Fatma Aydemir, Sasha Marianna Salzmann and Miryam Schellbach. His novel tells of a stroke of fate that affects an entire family, of a father-son relationship that ends abruptly after the father suffers a stroke and subsequent loss of speech. It testifies to the power of storytelling – which becomes clearest when language is the last thing you have left.
