The premiere of this production at Teatr Powszechny has caused a political scandal and attracted attention around the world. Now it’s coming to Berlin: Frljić carries us off to a country where no one wants to live, no one can live. A country where religious fervour and racist delusions are part of everyday life. Frljić’s production is based on Stanisław Wyspiański’s drama The Curse (1899), which depicts real events that took place in Gręboszów: a woman becomes pregnant by the village priest and is then marginalized and stoned by the community. Through drastic and radical images, this production denounces the nationalist, sexist, totalitarian reality in present-day Poland. Again and again it points out: »Everything that they see is pure fiction«. If only that were true. But it’s Europe’s present that’s depicted in this production of The Curse, through a parable based on Poland’s example.
