Declaration of Independence is an ongoing performance project, bringing together womxn colour to reflect on how the political affects the personal. The Declaration performances draw on Ama Ata Aidoo’s poem “As Always a Painful Declaration of Independence” to bring together personal testimonies exploring independence, interdependence and the present day impacts of colonial oppression, migration and racism. The performance invites an audience into a private yet public space to witness a social ritual of grief, celebration, storytelling, dreams, and forgotten histories in order to articulate and imagine strategies and possibilities toward a new definition of a self determined future.
