With her music Sema Moritz creates emotional moments of reminiscence and sets the tone with captivating updates of familiar melodies. Her concert provides peaceful moments of commemoration, as well as a grand celebration of life.
Sema Moritz is an artist based in Istanbul and Berlin. In the mid-80s she was the singer in the Kreuzberger Freunde ensemble and founded Sema & Taksim in Berlin in 1986, a group with which she would go on to release multiple CDs.
In Istanbul, she released her CDs Epic of Sheikh Bedreddin by Nazım Hikmet, a performance with Tuncel Kurtiz, A Composer of Beyoğlu with works by Armenian musician Karnik Garmiryan, Legendary Ladies with tangos, foxtrot, waltzes and operetta sung by singers who appeared on Istanbul’s stages between 1895 and 1940.
And now she has a mission under the title Ein Tropfen auf den heissen Stein (A drop on the hot stone), a collection of songs about exile, about rootlessness, about migration, with texts and music by Nazım Hikmet / Tahsin İncirci, Bertolt Brecht, Eric Satie and many more.
This event is part of ’61–’91–’21: Immer Wieder Deutschland, the accompanying programme for the exhibition Offener Prozess.
