Susanne Paul was born in California and grew up in the US and Germany. As a jazz cellist she has developed a unique colourful playing style which combines improvisation, groove and innovative techniques, reinventing the cello as a chord, bass, melody and rhythm instrument.
In her works, she uses elements from jazz, indie rock, polyrhythms, a variety of folk and contemporary music to create a singular, atmospheric musical language which sounds out the space between the notes.
She regularly works with a wide variety of musicians, ranging from Uwe Kropinski and Etta Scollo to Julia Hülsmann and Matthias Schriefl and teaches jazz cello at the UdK Berlin and JIB (Jazz Institute Berlin).
