Born in Rwanda in 1956, Scholastique Mukasonga experienced from childhood the violence of the ethnic conflict in Rwanda. In 1973, she had to go into exile in Burundi. A large part of her family fell victim to the genocide in Rwanda in 1994. She lives and works in Normandy. Her novels are published by Gallimard. She has been awarded the Prix Renaudot, the Grand Prix SGDL de la nouvelle and the Prix Simone de Beauvoir pour la liberté des femmes, among others.
