Sandra Hetzl writes, researches and translates contemporary Arabic literature, including works by Rasha Abbas, Haytham El Wardany, Kadhem Khanjar, Aboud Saeed, Bushra al-Maktari, Aref Hamza and Assaf Alassaf. In addition to poetry and prose, she has also translated two dozen plays from Arabic, including by Mohammad Al Attar, Mudar Alhaggi, Wael Kaddour and Rabie Mroué. In 2021, she published the study Translation of Arabic Literature in German Speaking Countries 2010-2020. She is the founder of the agency collective teneleven.org for contemporary Arabic literature.
