Marieluise Beck

Marieluise Beck is an expert on Eastern Europe, Senior Fellow and co-founder of the Center for Liberal Modernity. She was the speaker of the first Green parliamentary group in 1983 and a member of the German Bundestag until 2017, most recently in the Foreign Affairs Committee. In the red-green Bundestag government, she held the office of Migration Commissioner and was the Party Secretary of State in the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs. She was also a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the European Parliament. There she joined the Allianz der Liberalen und Demokraten für Europa (ALDE). She is a member of the board of the Petersburger Dialog. Marieluise Beck is respected beyond the boundaries of party politics as a foreign policy expert with a focus on Eastern and Southeastern Europe. As an advocate of a human rights-oriented foreign and security policy, she has extensive networks in politics and civil society in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, and Southeastern Europe. In addition to her political activities, she has repeatedly championed humanitarian causes. During the Serbian-Bosnian war, she founded the Brücke der Hoffnung aid organization, which spent over 10 million euros on humanitarian projects and was reactivated after February 24, 2022, to support Ukraine. She is a recipient of two Crosses of Merit on the Ribbon of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Ukrainian Order of Princess Olga (Third Class). In 2016, she was awarded the Ramer Award for Courage in the Defense of Democracy by the American Jewish Committee (AJC).
