Justin Langlands has been immersed in music from his childhood, initially learning piano and then progressing to drums and later on percussion. He cut his teeth with various bands during his teens and early twenties. Initially studying to be a graphic designer, he started recording music in his bedroom using a 4-track cassette recorder and then subsequently progressed into studio engineering and music production. He also made his mark as a DJ whilst working as Art Editor for the New Musical Express music paper, starting out in the 1980’s ‚warehouse party’ scene and rising to prominence as part of the Heavy Duty crew, who had a weekly residency at the notorious Wag club in London’s Soho and playing alongside Jerry Dammers (The Specials) at the 3As (Artists Against Apartheid) night in Seven Dials Covent Garden.
Justin went on to form Pressure Drop in 1990 with Heavy Duty DJ partner Dave Henley, carving a critically acclaimed niche and creating an influential fusion sound. Co-writing, engineering, programming, mixing and producing 5 albums with Pressure Drop he also developed his various skills with a variety of collaborations and numerous remixes, ranging from Leftfield to Courtney Pine via The Sugarhill Gang and Nitin Sawhney.
Alongside his music making he also continued to DJ, travelling all over the world, from Europe to Australia, the USA to Japan. Justin and Dave also hosted a weekly 2-hour radio programme called the Blood Brothers Broadcasting Corporation (BBBC) playing the sound of the international underground, recorded in London and broadcast weekly from Berlin Germany, between 1992 - 1997. The BBBC contributed to the ethos, culture and tradition of pirate and alternative UK radio broadcasting that the duo had grown up with. An archive of the broadcasts is now available online.
In conjunction with his many record releases, Justin’s music has consistently been used on soundtracks for a wide-range of programmes by broadcasters such as the BBC, Channel 4, ITV and Sky alongside other international networks, as well as being licensed for advertising and film use. At this time Justin has his own studio called Brighton Voice Studio from which he composes, records and produces a variety of projects, encompassing soundscapes, dub mixes and other music projects. He has been collaborating with Delaine Le Bas for many years on a number of soundscapes, of which the latest project is Beware of Linguistic Engineering.
