Joris Bas Backer studied visual art in Amsterdam and Rhode Island. Since 2003 he lives in Berlin and works as an artist, cartoonist and illustrator.
His freelance work deals with the themes of longing, identity, gender dysphoria and gender roles, which he attempts to visualize using drawings and texts.
He is co-founder of the artist group Palatti, the comic blog collective Chicks on Comics and part of the duo of the webcomic Familienjuwelen. His last exhibitions were in the Drawing Center Diepenheim in the Netherlands and in the Fundacion PROA in Buenos Aires.
He is currently working on his first graphic novel: A funny coming-of-age story about friendship, trans identity and body dysphoria in the years when we survived without internet.
