Maryam Mirza is an Iranian journalist and civil society activist. In Iran, she wrote for several publications of the women’s rights movement and was as an editorial board member of the prominent feminist magazine Zanan, closed down in January 2008. She was an active member of some NGOs and participated in different campaigns of the women’s movement. She left Iran on the day of the presidential election in 2009 and, unable to return ever since, lives now in Berlin working as a freelancer for the Persian section of Deutsche Welle and continues her work for Iranian civil society cooperating to establish a Volunteer Activists Institute with the mission of strengthening civil society in Iran.
