Elke Hartmann

Elke Hartmann currently represents the professorship for Turkish Studies at the University of Hamburg. She is a member of the DFG research association »Transottomanica« and director of the Houshamadyan project founded in 2010. 
Elke Hartmann studied History and Islamic Studies and received her doctorate at Freie Universität Berlin with a thesis on conscription in the Ottoman Empire, which was published in 2016 under the title »Die Reichweite des Staates. Conscription and Modern Statehood in the Ottoman Empire 1869-1910«. Her habilitation thesis at the Catholic University of Budapest on Armenian life and autobiographical writing in the Ottoman Empire will be published in Hungarian translation in two volumes in 2020/21. 
Elke Hartmann has already been a guest at the Gorki for several lectures and workshops in the context of various collaborations between Houshamadyan and the Maxim Gorki Theater, including events in 2015 for the 100th anniversary of the genocide of the Armenians* and in 2016 for the preparation of the play Denial by Yael Ronen.
