Christian Weise creates extremely playful, visually stunning, mostly comedic and musical works for the theatre. He directs classics dissected with a sharp contemporary eye and anchored firmly in the here and now. A key element in his work is the investigation of the theatrical possibilities and limits of the artificial use of scenography and costumes. Long-standing collaborations with a variety of costume and set designers including Andy Besuch, Josa Marx, Nina Peller, Joki Tewes & Jana Findeklee and, primarily, Julia Oschatz underline the value he places on a set that plays with elements from the visual arts. Together with musician Jens Dohle, Christian Weise develops extraordinary, highly musical directorial concepts, which captivate audiences with their slapstick underscored with music and perfectly timed sound effects. They playfully incorporate elements of performing across genders and examine, in an undogmatic way, complex relationships between the real and the imagined. His productions at the Gorki include Alles Schwindel, Elizaveta Bam, Hamlet, Queen Lear, Drei Schwestern, Der Untertan and Carmen, premiering in the 2024/25 season.
