Benjamin von Blomberg

Benjamin von Blomberg, born in 1978, studied historical musicology, German language and literature as well as business economics in Hamburg. Together with director Benedikt von Peter, he was co-founder of the free opera group “evviva la diva” already during his studies. With this group he served as dramaturg and executive producer for productions in Berlin, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, and elsewhere. At the Thalia Theater Hamburg he had his first guest performance in “Quixote in der Stadt” (directed by Andreas Kriegenburg) in 2005 and from 2006 to 2010 he worked as dramaturg there, first under director Ulrich Khuon and finally under Joachim Lux. In addition, he was repeatedly involved in opera projects, such as “Cesare” by Georg Friedrich Händel for the Theater an der Wien in 2007 (directed by Christof Loy). Starting in 2010 Benjamin von Blomberg worked as freelance dramaturg in Berlin, Hamburg, Hannover, at the Salzburger Festspiele and in Zurich, etc. He has repeatedly collaborated with directors Stefan Pucher, Frank Abt, Benedikt von Peter and Nicolas Stemann, with whom he frequently staged the debut performances of plays by Elfriede Jelinek and was regularly invited to the Berliner Theatertreffen (most recently in 2012 to present the production “Faust 1+2” by Johann Wolfgang Goethe). The staging of Elfriede Jelinek’s “Die Kontrakte des Kaufmanns” (directed by Nicolas Stemann), which was produced for the Thalia Theater and the Schauspiel Köln in 2010, was performed at the Festival d'Avignon in 2012. In 2013 an invitation to present “Faust 1+2” followed suit.

From 2012 to 2015 Benjamin von Blomberg was head dramaturg and manager for the category drama at the Theater Bremen. In addition, he publishes articles in specialty journals and regularly serves as juror and lecturer, among others for the Körber Studio Junge Regie and in cooperation with the Goethe Institute Amsterdam. Most recently, in the summer of 2013 the Goethe Institute invited him to conduct a “Faust” workshop in Seoul, Korea. In 2012 Benjamin von Blomberg was elected “Dramaturg of the Year” by the magazine “Theater heute”.
Starting with the 2015/16 season Benjamin von Blomberg is working as head dramaturg at the Münchner Kammerspiele.
