People on a concrete square, heading in all possible directions, seemingly without any connection to one another. But their fates are still linked together: this photograph was taken on April 15th, 2023, the day when a new war broke out, first in the capital of Khartoum and then in the rest of Sudan. Sudanese photographer Ala Kheir took this photo and captioned it with »Khartoum and the state of mind«. Originally from Darfur, the region in western Sudan which has been plagued by conflict for years, he documents the war with a singular, occasionally oscillating into the poetic, visual language.
On May 3rd, World Press Freedom Day, Reporters without Borders (RSF) will release a new volume of photographs under the title Fotos für die Pressefreiheit 2024. Together with Sudanese photographer Ala Kheir and peace and conflict researcher Dr. Gerrit Kurtz, RSF board member Gemma Pörzgen discusses Sudan and the freedom of the press in wartime.
