Global uprisings have been emblematic of the 2010s. Citizens worldwide protested corrupt governments, economic inequality, and injustice, demanding action and change.  While each struggle emerged as a result of specific political, social and economic reasons, they share commonalities in that there was a demand for a new social contract between citizens and the state, where power structures could be reconfigured, leading to more democratic and participatory cultures. These uprisings were characterized by a surge of hope, where the possibility of change seemed feasible. Eventually, however, authoritarian regimes took back control, democratic backsliding and growing oppression becoming characteristic, while in other cases countries were plunged into civil war. An atmosphere of fear, repression and terror was subsequently created, which continues to have an effect today.
