Jean-Luc Nancy

Jean-Luc Nancy is one of the most important contemporary philosophers. His philosophical thinking is based on a deconstructivist interpretation of the German philosophical tradition, Heidegger in particular. It extends from aesthetics to reflections on religion and physicality, to his redefinition of the relationship between democracy and community in political philosophy.

Nancy studied philosophy in Paris, wrote his PhD under Paul Ricœur and taught philosophy from 1968 to 2004 at the Université Marc Bloch in Strasbourg. In 1980, he and Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe founded the Center de Recherches Philosophiques sur la Politique in Paris. He has been a visiting professor in Berkeley, Irvine, San Diego and Berlin.
