Writer and director Marlene Streeruwitz is one of Austria’s most distinguished contemporary authors speaking out on current political and social issues. In her work, she deals with the contradictions of Austrian culture, criticizing the prevalent hyperneoliberalism and raising her voice against nationalism, discrimination and injustice in essays, articles, and videos. She takes a strong stand on feminist issues and has been fighting against right wing populism since the rise of the FPÖ.

She obtained a university degree in Slavonic studies and art history. In 1996, she published her first novel, Verführungen. 3. Folge. Frauenjahre, for which she received the Mara Cassens prize, among others.
