GLITTERING POSTCARDS IN A BOX, MOANING BLONDES, SCREAMING LITTLE MEN ...

(Please scroll down for the original column in Turkish)

Almost every family in Turkey has a story to tell about migration to Germany. Either relatives were sent to the “strange land” or there was talk of neighbours who had tried to go. Or someone from the neighbourhood had gone to “Alamanya” and returned one day with a plumed hat upon his head and a blonde “bride” in his arms. At the very least, every person in the country has heard the lament “Germany, bitter homeland” by Ruhi Su or by Selda:

»Germany, bitter homeland / It doesn't smile at anyone /
I'm at a loss / Some never return /
You went to Germany / You got married there /
Seven years are over / You haven't returned /
You send a bit of money / what good is that /
Your family and your five children / it's you they want back«

                                                     ***

For me, Germany was the postcards my uncle Aydın sent us from afar. Glittering greeting cards with happy, smiling, well-fed German children on them ... So that the glitter dust wouldn't fall off, I kept these postcards in a special box. I still have it today ... and the postcards as well. I'll also never forget the ballpoint pen that my uncle brought for me when he returned. A pen filled with some liquid and a mini-ferry floating in its hull ... When I began to write, the ferry plunged down, and when I took the pen away from the paper, the ferry returned to the harbour. This ferry, which floated at my desk every day, was the ship that took me out into the wide unknown world. It was my ship of dreams ...

So what was Germany for me?

It was a ferry floating in a pen; it was the well-fed child who smiled out of the postcard at me; and it was blonde women who ruined happy families.

                                                     ***

When we hit puberty, these blondes started moaning like crazy in bed. When the film Almanya aci vatan (Germany, Bitter Homeland) was shot, Turkish cinema was at rock bottom and had long since surrendered to the porn industry. Cinemas were closing one after the other; whoever was able to compete showed nothing but porno films, three performances in a row for the price of one. Of course, these films were banned, but the authorities turned a blind eye. Of course, youth staring at the screen and stroking themselves was better than if they'd join political protests on the streets.

In the 1980s VHS arrived and the blonde women from the silver screen now flickered on TV screens in living rooms. The Turkish porn actresses weren't bold enough, which is why pornos were imported from Germany. Thanks to mass copying, video cassettes were also used in households with adolescents to finally conquer their wet dreams. That's why the first German phrase my generation learned in those days was: “Ahh vundebaaa ...” - A German moan of “Oh, wonderful!”

                                                     ***

Thanks to Gerd Müller and Franz Beckenbauer, we also found German men who fascinated us.
We discovered Thomas Mann, Friedrich Hegel, Friedrich Nietzsche, Jürgen Habermas, Günter Grass, Hermann Hesse and Theodor Adorno later.
But above all, Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels ...
The works of the latter two were part of our reading material during our studies. Das Kapital with its poor translation and low quality print, wasn't light fare, yet we devoured it with a voracious appetite.

It wasn't until we saw The Tin Drum on the big screen that we began to recognise other kinds of screaming. Those were the years when we tried to wake up the unconscious masses. The streets of Turkey had long been overcrowded with wanna-be Nazis trained in special combat camps. They believed that the Turks were a superior race and had vowed to destroy the communists. They sang their martial marches, they grew a certain form of moustache, they had certain greeting rituals, and they had their “başbuğ”, their “Führer.” Their advance couldn't be ignored, nor the shots that followed. More and more of our friends fell victim to these shots.

The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui was underway and we tried to resist in the university cafeteria with Brecht's poems. We would read each other short passages from Wilhelm Reich's Listen, Little Man!.

We were surrounded by “little men”. They neither denounced their oppressors nor addressed the catastrophe that was inevitably approaching them. On the contrary, they bowed to despotism, celebrated it frenetically, sang hymns of praise to it and dreamed of someday becoming part of the tyranny themselves. Those who resisted were “traitors”, whom the little men had long been ready to stone.

It was also such small men who once helped the Nazis seize power. In Turkey, they paved the way for the military coup in 1980, after which reading works by Marx and Engels was banned. Anyone who read them anyway was imprisoned, tortured and executed. After the coup in 1980, Turkey's left-wing vein was lopped off. In order to prevent communism, the religious education system gained more and more importance, the path was cleared for political Islam.
Erdoğan is the fruit of the seeds that were sown at that time.

                                                     ***

When he described the Germans as “Nazis” last month, he received furious applause from masses ... They sang exaggerated praises to him. Maybe they dreamed secretly of someday being like him.
We were among those who said that one should not bow to the oppressor, that one must resist. But in the eyes of these masses, we were “enemies”, even, “traitors”. We wrote dangerous things, so we should be excluded, stoned, shot.

Our pen that formulated calls to the uprising, finally took us along on the ferry that was in it and brought us to the land of well-fed children who smiled at us from glittering cards.
Now it's time for us to free the country where we were born from the small men and to steer our ferry safely into its home port.

Her gün, masamın başında defalarca inip kalkan o feribot, bilmediğim uzak diyarlara yolculuğumun gemisiydi. Hayal vapurum…
    Almanya mı?
Bir kalemin içinde yüzen feribot, yaldızlı karttan gülümseyen gürbüz çocuk, mutlu aileleri dağıtan sarışın kadındı Almanya…

                                                          ***

Ergenlik çağımıza geldiğimizde o sarışın kadınlar, yatakta çığlık çığlığa bağırmaya başlamıştı. »Almanya Acı Vatan« türküsü filme çekildiğinde Türk sineması çökmüş, piyasa pornoya teslim olmuştu. Sinema salonları birer ikişer kapanıyor, açık kalabilenler »üç film birden« porno oynatıyordu. Yasaktı aslında; ama yetkililer gözyumuyordu: Gençler sokağa çıkıp protesto gösterilerine katılacağına, bir sinema salonunda gözlerini perdeye dikip kendilerini okşasa daha iyiydi.
80’lerde video geldi ve perdedeki sarışın kadınlar, ekranlara taşındı. Henüz Türk kadın pornocular yeterince cesur değildi; o yüzden Almanya’dan porno filmler ithal edildi, hızla çoğaltılıp önce ergen evlerine, sonra ergen düşlerine girdi. O yüzden bizim kuşak gençlerin ilk öğrendiği Almanca kelime, »Ahh vundebaaa..« (wundebar) şeklinde bir inleme olmuştur.

                                                           ***

Neyse ki Gerd Müller, Franz Beckenbauer gibiler sayesinde hayran olunacak Alman erkekleri de bulmuştuk.
    Thomass Mann’ı, Friedrich Hegel’i, Friedrich Nietzsche’yi, Jürgen Habermas’ı, Günter Grass’ı, Hermann Hesse’yi, Theodor Adorno’yu keşfimiz daha sonradır.
Nihayet »Teneke Trampet«i izlediğimizde perdede farklı çığlıklar duymaya başladık. Duyarsız kitleleri uyandırmak için sloganlarla haykırdığımız yıllardı. Türkiye sokakları, Nazi özentileriyle dolup taşmıştı. Kamplarda yetiştiriliyorlardı, Türklerin üstün ırk olduğuna inanıyorlardı. Komünistleri yok etmeye yeminlilerdi, Özel marşları, bıyıkları, selamlaşmaları, »başbuğ«ları vardı. Ayak sesleri zamanla silah seslerine dönüştü. Arkadaşlarımızı kaybetmeye başladık.
»Artro Ui’nin Önlenebilir Tırmanışı«na karşı üniversite kantininde Brecht’in şiirleriyle direniyor, birbirimize Wilhelm Reich’ın »Dinle Küçük Adam«ından pasajlar okuyorduk.

Biz, »Seni ezene teslim olma, diren« diyenlerdendik. »Düşman«dık onların gözünde; »hain«dik. Tehlikeli şeyler yazıyorduk; dışlanmalı, taşlanmalı, kurşunlanmalıydık.
İsyan çağrıları yazan tükenmez kalemimiz sonunda bizi, içindeki tutsak feribota bindirdi; yaldızlı kartlardan gülümseyen gürbüz çocukların ülkesine getirdi.
Şimdi doğduğumuz toprakları »küçük adam«lardan kurtarma ve feribotumuzu salimen limana çıkarma sırası bizdeydi.
