A communication desaster

(Please scroll down to read the Turkish version of the column.)

Our tongue is one of our oddest organs ...
It can make one look ridiculous or make sure that one's every wish is fulfilled.
Sometimes a single word opens closed doors, sometimes a word can, in turn, create significant obstacles.
It is our tongue that connects us to each other when it's used properly, or separates us forever when it's used poorly.

Berlin, whose language I haven't learned yet, thankfully treats me with a great degree of sympathy. It does not tell me directly to my face that I am stranger here. Even if I do not address Berlin in its language, it listens, understands me and answers me in languages that I know.
But the city's multilingualism was recently the cause of an unexpected communication disaster ...
On that day I needed to go to the airport.
I ordered a taxi.
I told the young taxi driver in English that I had to go to the airport.
He asked me, in English, which airport I wanted to go to. I named the airport.
Before he left, he pointed to his earphone and asked me politely in English: “I'm on the phone with my girlfriend. Do you mind if I continue the conversation?”
“No, you can continue,” I said, leaned back and read my newspaper.
And then suddenly ...
Words familiar to my ear filled the taxi... Words of longing directed to a lover beyond the border, reached my ear:
“Yes, sweetie ... Where did we leave off?”
Like many others in Berlin, my taxi driver was a Turk and had picked up a customer in the middle of a private conversation with his girlfriend.
Assuming that his passenger was a foreigner, he now continued his private chat.
It wouldn't have been polite to interrupt his conversation and remind him that there are two Turks in the taxi. I went back to my newspaper.
After a while, however, the conversation that drifted back from the driver's seat became more and more private. In the belief that his passenger would not understand anything, the young taxi driver began to utter his intimate thoughts without a care.
If she remembered “the night we spent together”?
“How nice it all was”.
He has been dreaming of her for days and that gave life a whole new meaning.
The longer my driver talked, the deeper I buried myself in my seat, hiding behind my newspaper.
Unfortunately, I didn't have my headphones ...
While I was considering how I should behave, their conversation took an erotic turn.
The details of that night came into play. Songs of praise were sung to the hair, to the skin, to the fragrance of the beloved and to her lingerie.
“What a floral scent that was ...”
“And your lingerie! How perfect it was for your body ...”
I felt like an uninvited guest in the middle of a very private conversation. Unintentionally, I became an ear witness to things I actually shouldn't have heard.
If I had said I wanted to get out, I would have missed my plane.
If I had interrupted the telephone call and confessed that I spoke his language and understood everything, he might have taken me to task for not saying something earlier. Maybe he would have been ashamed or snapped at me.
It would not have been proper to pretended to sleep.
Furthermore, there was no spot in the car where I could have hid myself.
Full of guilt, I looked out the window and tried not to notice anything specific out of what I heard. Waves of guilt washed over me because I was hearing about the private life of a young woman who was completely unknown to me.
The more I wanted the trip to end as soon as possible, the longer the conversation became, the longer the road to the airport.
And, of course, the longer the details of that night…

While my young driver continued to expose his intimacies behind the alleged protective shield of the Turkish language, I thought about what a foolish venture that was: hiding behind a language in a cosmopolitan city like Berlin.
We were two people who spoke the same language, in the home of a second language, but through the help of a third language created a communication disaster.
In Turkish, one says: “The tongue has no bone ...”
The Turkish language likes to indulge in comfort. One can express oneself with rich imagery and does not have to mince words. Above all, in the presence of those who do not know it, one can babble on, pour out one's heart. On the other hand for people who, like me, are suddenly catapulted into an unintended conversation, the language quite literally fails them or they hide behind the mask of another language.

Anyway ...
The trip ended, but the conversation did not.
As I was about to leave, my young driver was still busy with the details of that passionate night. He briefly interrupted his telephone call, pressed the taximeter, took the money, gave me my change, and asked if I needed a receipt.
“I need one,” I said, not without fear that the slightest mistake in my gestures and facial expressions might reveal our linguistic commonality.
Fleeing quickly, I then left the car without thinking about the receipt ...
I ran to the terminal building and was recognized by some Turkish taxi drivers who were in the waiting queue with their cars ... One of them spoke to me, “Brother, you here?” and wanted to engage me in a conversation. “I'm going to Portugal,” I said hastily, and suddenly felt a hand on my shoulder.
I turned around.
It was my taxi driver.
In his hand the receipt, which I had forgotten in my rush, and in his eyes the astonishment at the fact that we spoke a common tongue.

BİR İLETİŞİM KAZASI

Dilimiz, en tuhaf organlarımızdan biri…
İnsanı rezil de edebiliyor, vezir de…
Bazen bir sözüyle kapılar açıyor önümüze, bazen bir gafıyla barikatlar kuruyor.
İyi kullanıldığında bizi birbirimize bağlayan da o; kötü kullanıldığında ebediyen ayıran da…

***

Rahatına düşkündür dilimiz, her yana dönebilir, aklına geleni söyleyebilir.

***

Neyse…
Yol bitti, sohbet bitmedi.
Ben inerken genç şoförüm hala şehvetli gecenin hararetli detaylarıyla meşguldü. Sohbete ara verip para göstergesine dokundu, parasını aldı, üstünü verdi, fiş isteyip istemediğimi sordu.
İngilizce »İsterim« dedim, ama artık küçük bir hatamla dildaşlığımızın ortaya çıkmasından, dil oyunumun anlaşılmasından korkuyordum.
Hızla toplanıp fişi almadan adeta kaçtım arabadan…
Alana doğru koştururken sırada bekleyen birkaç Türk taksi şoförü tanıdı beni… İçlerinden biri »Hayırdır abi, sen buralarda…« diye lafa girdi.
»Portekiz’e uçuyorum« derken birden omzuma bir el dokundu.
Dönüp baktım.
Oydu.
Elinde telaştan almayı unuttuğum fişim, gözlerinde ortak bir dil konuştuğumuzu öğrenmiş olmanın hayreti vardı.
