THE POLITICAL VOICE INSTITUTE IS LAUNCHING IN SEPTEMBER 2019 AT THE MAXIM GORKI THEATRE IN BERLIN AS THE CONTINUATION OF AN EXPLORATION OF CONTEMPORARY CHORUS THEATRE. THE INSTITUTE IS A WORKSHOP CENTRE FOR THE USE OF THE COLLECTIVE VOICE/BODY AND LANGUAGE. IT IS A SOCIAL LABORATORY, WHICH SEEKS TO BUILD OPEN, DIVERSE COMMUNITIES AND STRENGTHEN STRATEGIES FOR RESISTANCE TO AND CRITICISM OF VIOLENCE IN SOCIAL LIFE. IT RESEARCHES AND DEVELOPS PRACTICES IN THE DOMAIN OF THE POLITICAL CHARACTER OF THE VOICE/BODY/LANGUAGE.
IT LOOKS FOR PRACTICAL ANSWER TO THE QUESTION: HOW CAN THE VOICE BE USED FOR FREEDOM?
The Maxim Gorki Theatre is calling for participants for a year-long laboratory, in which the Polish director and author Marta Górnicka will continue her research on the political dimensions of language and contemporary choral theatre based on her 10-year experience with the Chorus of Women.
Marta Górnicka has gained international fame for her innovative work with choruses. In her works, Górnicka often probes the relationship between the individual and society and experiments with new forms of collective choral voices.
POLITICAL VOICE INSTITUTE
Work at the POLITICAL VOICE INSTITUTE takes place in the following fields:
+ the INSTITUTE enters disputed territories, it does not hesitate to transgress the »no platform« rule and the principles of political correctness,
+ the INSTITUTE is open to working with people of extreme opinions. It uses the languages and voices of radical counter-audiences. It literally encounters the bodies and languages of OTHERS,
+ the INSTITUTE’S PERFORMING TEAM experiments with contemporary body/voice techniques and polyphony,
+the CHOREO CHORUS initiates work on dance technique and the choreography of collectivity,
+ the INSTITUTE creates librettos, manifestos, performances, it initiates public debate, performative actions and political interventions in the public space,
+ the INSTITUTE initiates practical work in the spirit of intersectional feminism and collective memory studies,
+ the INSTITUTE undertakes work and research on the workshop for the new society – practices of finding voice, giving voice, hearing and listening.
The MAXIM GORKI THEATRE is calling for permanent participants in a performance group of fifteen members which will continuously explore and experiment with contemporary choral theatre.
The casting is open to everyone who may be interested, regardless of their gender, age, or artistic and musical experience. We also welcome actors, dancers, DJs, composers and choreographers.
From January 2020 to May 2020 we will work together in regular, monthly workshop sessions. These sessions will consist of voice/body workshops, choreography practice and work with sheet music.
