Perhaps it was an illusion,but it seemed as though demands for equal rights for everyone were receiving more and more approval. This was confirmed by consecutive successes at the Constitutional Court with regard to the rights of LGBTQI individuals. However, with the advent of racially-charged, neo-nationalist discourse in Europe and growing influence of conservative and religious movements, we're experiencing a »backlash« that presents new challenges to democratic thinking. Is history repeating itself? How can this development be explained? Which political, social and artistic strategies have proven effective?
